Robert Lambert GapperKeeper of College Collections 1934–1962Robert Lambert Gapper ARCA (b.1897 Llanaelhaearn) trained at the Royal College of Art from 1923 until 1927, returning to Wales in 1928. He was appointed by Dan Jones as temporary assistant lecturer in art in 1934 during the brief autonomy of the Department of Arts and Crafts from the Education Department. After the sudden death of Dan Jones in the autumn of 1934, Gapper took responsibility for the teaching of art and the curatorship of the collections. However as the University withdrew its support for the Department of Arts and Crafts, he worked within the Education Department, with little support for the development or display of the collections. Gapper worked as a sculptor and carried out many public commissions. He was closely associated with the development of art and craft at the National Eisteddfod, for which he designed the prestigious Gold Medal for Art. |
